How Can You Teach Your Child to Behave Well?

From Facebook
  1. Children act like you do. Therefore, use your behavior to guide your child's behavior in the right direction. What you do is much more important than what you say.
  2. Show your child how you feel. Tell him or her honestly how their behavior affects you. When you begin sentences with "I," your child begins to look at things from your point of view.
  3. Praise your child when he or she behaves well. It is better to say "You're playing so well. I like when all of your blocks are on the table" before they get strewn about the entire room.
  4. Come down to your child's level. Squat down or kneel when talking to your child. This allows you to tune in to what your little one might feel or think. This also helps your child focus on what you're saying or asking.
  5. Use communication. If you are true to your word, your child will learn to trust and respect you. If you say that you are going to go for a walk after your child cleans up their toys, make sure that you have comfortable shoes for walking.
  6. Remove temptations. It's hard for a child to remember everything that they're not allowed to touch. Thus, you lower the chances of innocent, but expensive, research. Just remove temptations from view.
  7. Be firm in your decisions. If you say "no," and then recant, next time your child will whine even more, hoping to get lucky once again.
  8. Give simple and clear instructions, and then your child will know exactly what you expect from them. For example, "Please hold my hand while we cross the street" is better than "Don't run across the road without me."
  9. As he or she gets older, you can entrust your child with more responsibility for their behavior so that he or she can naturally feel the consequences of their behavior. It seems that Mark Twain said: "Don't punish your child for breaking a window; let him spend the night in the room with the broken window."
  10. Let your child feel important. Children love to be useful and carry their weight in the family. Therefore, entrust your child with those things that he or she can do. This allows them to feel important and your child will try even harder to help.
